TEMPORARY MEASURES FOR HASPOLAT IN FORCE

TEMPORARY MEASURES FOR HASPOLAT IN FORCE

The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation produced a few alternatives for pedestrians after the zebra crossing and the bus stop on the Gazimağusa-Lefkoşa Road, to the north of Haspolat, was removed for traffic safety.

Highways Department took on the job of building a fence at the spot where the pedestrian crossing was and close the gap between the crash barriers in order to block access to the other side of the road.

A warning sign was also erected, directing the pedestrians who want to cross to the south of the dual carriage way towards the underpass. The traffic at the underpass became one way only allowing vehicles to cross from the Haspolat-Taşkent Road to Gazimağusa-Lefkoşa Road. Space for pedestrians at the underpass was also widened and new crash barriers were installed.

The Ministry will sign a protocol with the Cyprus International University in the new future where the university will be responsible for the maintenance of the underpass, which will include the construction of a wider sidewalk and launch a ring service between the campus and apartment blocks to the south of Haspolat-Taşkent Roundabout.

The university will also build an overbridge on the Lefkoşa-Mağusa road for pedestrians, which is foreseen as a permanent solution to the problem.
