ELECTRONIC PAYMENT FOR NEW PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM

ELECTRONIC PAYMENT FOR NEW PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM

Works to implement an “electronic payment system” in public transport have reached a certain phase. The electronic payment system will be a part of an improved public transport system through gathering businesses under a corporation.

Labelled as “ADA Kart” (Island Card), the new system will allow passengers to pay for their journey, in all vehicles in every area. The card will be sold and topped up in various selling points, news agents and kiosks. The card will also operate through smart phone applications.

When a passenger boards a bus o any vehicle, the system will distract the exact cost of the journey from the card, preventing overpayment or undeclared income by companies.

The ministry’s plan to revitalise the public transport system also includes a central monitoring unit to prevent bus stop violations, route violations, traffic violations and smart bus stops.

The ministry aims to implement the system starting from early 2020.
