Minister of Public Works and Transportation Resmiye Canaltay launched the procedure to cancel the driving licence of Thomas Aboubeleye Akpanke, who was hospitalised on Wednesday morning after causing a traffic accident with 410 promil alcohol in his blood.
Minister Canaltay, who also serves as the Motor Vehicle Registrar, will be cancelling the driving licence of Akpanke on the ground that Akpanke’s continuation of driving is harmful to public safety, an authority granted to the Motor Vehicle Registrar by the Motor Vehicle Road and Traffic Regulation.
Minister Canaltay said that the number of accidents caused by reckless drivers who consumed excessive amounts of alcohol and threatened the lives of others was recently on the rise.
“Cancellation of driving licences of these unruly drivers who disregard other’s right to live will become a routine practice. I ask from our people and foreigners living in the TRNC not to drink and drive, refrain from speeding excessively and to abide by the traffic rules. This is not a joke, human lives are at stake. No mercy will be shown to those who put public safety in danger in traffic and their driving licences will be cancelled” Minister Canaltay said.
