The first woman to become the Minister of Public Works and Transportation, Resmiye Canaltay visited the area twice to discuss the road with the mayors since she took office on February 22, 2021.
During her first visit, a week after she took office, Resmiye Canaltay met the administrators of the contracting company and the mayors of Alsancak and Lapta to discuss the finalisation of the project.
Last week, Minister Canaltay visited the municipalities for a second time. She first met with the Mayor of Alsancak Fırat Ataser and later visited Lapta Mayor Mustafa Aktuğ to discuss the Girne Western Bypass and the projects of municipalities in fields that fall under the responsibility of the ministry.
During the past three weeks, Minister of Public Works and Transportation Canaltay also paid a visit to the Gazimağusa Port where she examined the wooden pier which partially collapsed in 2017. Canaltay gave necessary instructions for the reconstruction of the collapsed section of the pier to be completed. During her visit to Gazimağusa, Canaltay also observed the building of the Gazimağusa Parcel Post, which became insufficient in terms of space after the increase of on-line shopping due to Covid-19. Minister Canaltay directed her bureaucrats to find a new location for the package post to provide more quality service to the public. The minister also inspected the works launched jointly by the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation and the Gazimağusa Municipality to fix the street lights on the Gazimağusa-İskele Road. The current works are being done to determine the damage done to the system and the resources that will be required to fix it.
In addition to these, Minister Canaltay also inspected the Lefkoşa Northern Bypass and the Değirmenlik-Çatalköy dual carriage way which are under construction. The Turkish Ambassador to Lefkoşa Ali Murat Başçeri accompanied the minister during the inspections.
